Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson was left shaking his head at the second half of his side’s five-goal rout that saw them slump to a 5-0 Nations League defeat by England on Sunday.
The “Green Giants” did well in the first half to hold on to the score, but shortly into the second half, the team conceded a penalty and was reduce to 10 men. Then, they were continuously shot at until they were defeat miserably. Hallgrimsson was disappoint with what happen in the game.
After a scoreless first half in which the Irish had effectively frustrat England. Harry Kane put the hosts ahead from the spot after Liam Scales was give a second yellow card and sent off for a foul on Jude Bellingham.
Down to 10 men, the Republic of Ireland crumbled as Anthony Gordon and Conor Gallagher quickly stretched England’s lead before Jarrod Bowen and Taylor Harwood-Bellis completed a miserable evening for Hallgrimsson.
“The first half went the way we wanted, but when you’re losing 5-0, there’s nothing to talk about,” Hallgrimsson said. “It was six, eight minutes of madness that ended with a penalty. It’s one thing to lose the ball. It’s another to not react and to lose a penalty, to lose a player, it’s shocking.”
“1-0 and then the second goal, I felt like we were out of it at that point. After that, there was no way to get back into the game.”
